2011 Retrospective - The Light in our Eyes

The price of Silence went up today. You heard that somewhere... after you came home from work. Where was it? On the television, likely. It was blaring away as you walked in the door. As it always is, every single day. Your spouse met you at the door, but the children stayed in the other room, under the television’s sheltering glow. You can’t blame them, really. They’re only young. They don’t understand what it says to them, but they feel safe all the same.  As safe as anyone can be these days. Best not to think about that, though. Best to just put it out of your mind. Crime is down, after all. Theft, rape... all gone. That’s got to count for something, right?

You hear a fanfare from the other room, and everyone rushes in to cluster around the television. The News is starting! Everybody loves the News, and everyone watches it. The News can always be depended on to bring the latest information about what is happening in society, and changes to the prices of goods and commodities. But more importantly than that, on a visceral, subconscious level, the News is safe. Watching the News is the only time, ever, that there is a 100% certainty that you will not have an... incident. Without the use of Silence, anyway.  For some reason, because of some strange coincidence- and it must be coincidence, it must!- the News grants immunity to the Noise.

Some people, the older ones, tell stories of a time before the Noise. You smile at them when they say it, listen politely and thank them when they are finished.  After all, no need to hurt their feelings. No need to make their situations any worse. Because you know that they’ve been affected... had too many incidents, or just gone ‘round the bend. There’s really no need to point out that it’s not true. That it can’t be true. A time without the Noise is... inconceivable. It’s impossible! The Noise is everywhere, always. Every second of every single day it is there, twisting and turning in the back of your mind. Sometimes you can almost tune it out, push it down and away until it is no more than a faintly sickening shudder in the back of your mind. You can’t talk about it, can’t even think about it, because that might call it. And sometimes, sometimes you can’t suppress it. It thunders into your mind, stretching, growing until it feels like your head will explode, bursting from the pressure of this jangling, discordant NOISE. It fills you up, and you can’t move, you’re... paralysed. You can’t move, can’t cry for help, can’t even think. You can hardly even breathe, for you’re trapped in its disjointed pathways, its skewed rhythm beating against your mind. There is only the Noise, etching itself into every raw nerve.

Slowly, after a painful eternity, the Noise subsides, until you can move again, can regain some semblance of function. But every time a wave leaves you, you can feel it taking a little piece of your mind as it sinks back into the subliminal. Each and every time, you lose a piece of your sanity to the Noise. Every incident you have, a piece of your humanity is lost forever.

That’s why everybody loves the News. Absolutely, 100% incident free. Sometimes it even seems like the Noise isn’t there. That it’s gone. But it never is, and that’s why Silence is so valuable. Silence, that wonderful product that keeps the Noise at bay. With Silence, you can live your life without every worrying about an incident taking you or your family. Provided you have enough, for you have to use it constantly. Nothing can save you once the Noise takes you, not even Silence. There is no cure for an incident, only prevention. Constant Silence, forever. Or else.

The News ends, and you can hear that droning madness buzzing in the back of your mind. Why? What happened? You have Silence, you keep it above the kitchen sink. So why can you hear it? Why aren’t you protected from the Noise? You run to the kitchen, trying desperately to think of anything but what could happen to you at any moment now that you’re vulnerable. You clatter to a halt, seeing the box of Silence standing empty on the counter. The last box. You must have more, and quickly. You must! So you sprint to the depot, as fast as you can. You push people aside as you run, those standing straight in Silence, those hunched under the Noise. You skirt past a dark alley, and finally you’re inside, staring at the comforting rows of Silence lining the shelves. The Noise swells in the back of your mind, and you panic, grabbing all the boxes you can hold. You turn, but the price draws you up short.

It’s... insane. How can they possibly ask that for it? They know people need it, know how much they rely on it. So why is it quadruple its price, if not more? You look down at the boxes in your arms. There’s no way you can afford this. Your family needs to eat, right? But maybe... maybe starvation is better than insanity... because-

Because you’ve seen those who’ve been touched by the Noise. Those who can’t afford Silence. Oh, they look normal enough from a distance. But get close, and you can see it. They’re... not right in the head. Twisted somehow, changed. As they draw close you see the unholy spark in their hungry eyes, and the fear of death creeps up your spine. Will it go for your throat? It might. Or it might follow you home, may claw at your door into the lonely hours of the night, screaming vituperous rage all the while. The quiet ones are the worst. They’ll pass you by, watching with their inhuman orbs. They’ll follow you home as well, but you won’t know it. Because they won’t scream at your door, they’ll climb in a window, or a chimney, or find some other slippery way in. You won’t wake up, if that happens. You wouldn’t want to.

Now all you can think of is the brown eyes of your precious little girl. So wide, so innocent. And you see a nightmare flame igniting in them as her vicious smile sets your flesh crawling, making you wonder just how long it will take you to die... You’ll do anything to prevent that, ANYTHING. Even starve her, though it breaks your heart. But wait! Maybe there’s a way you can avoid both? Because what’s that further along down the aisle? It’s something you’ve never seen before, a new product. Quiet. Cheaper than Silence, that’s for sure. But maybe, it’s not as good? The name certainly suggests it. Nevertheless, this gives you a chance to feed your family and avoid insanity. Quiet should hold the Noise off. For a time. You hope.

Another new product  catches your eye, so you venture further along, the Noise in your head reduced to a stray whisper. Black boxes, and gray, as far as the eye can see. Dark and... Dim. What could they possibly be for? Surely there’s n-

Frenzied screams pierce the air as an actinic light blinds you, making your eyes water furiously. You blink, but your eyes can’t adjust to the blazing white light that surrounds you from every direction. Scintillating patterns, white on white, dance upon your retinas, demented spirals tugging your mind in all different directions. It fills your eyes, fills your mind until there is nothing else. You can’t move, can’t think, can barely even breathe. There is only this, this incident that nothing will save you from. The Noise is quiet for now, almost quiescent as you suffer.

Maybe you’ll die here, with the white in your eyes, mind irrevocable snapped. Maybe you’ll become one of the touched, preying upon those who’ve staved off insanity for one more day. Or maybe you’ll walk home with its patterns still dancing in the back of your mind, making your vision slip and tunnel. And in time, you’ll become one of those pitiable old people, telling anyone who’ll listen sad stories about a time before the Light.

2010 Retrospective - Cutting Edge

Transcript:
Art… is pain. Art is suffering. The great artists; van Gogh, Kahlo, Hemingway, countless others; they all knew this. They starved, they hurt, they suffered. They knew privation, poverty, pain. Tortured souls, each and every one of them, suffering for their art. Every great work was conceived in a world of hurt and born through blood and tears. How can one find the inspiration and passion for such a work, if not in the fiery house of pain? For love? I think not. In love all energy is focused without, on the object of love. There is none of the conflict, the mind feeding on its own shortcomings in an endless vicious loop to fuel such an undertaking. Unless it is not returned. Then, then it can be found in love, for what is unrequited love, if not pain? Something so sweet that is always out of reach. Yes, you can find art in love, provided it has soured into pain.

In this age of healthcare and government assistance, what modern masterpieces have arisen? The only ones who feel the necessary pain have not the means t bring it into the world, and those with the means have not the motivation. So none of this world’s perfect suffering can be brought into the world as something all can enjoy. All open-minded enough to see true beauty, that is. Not the shallow contrivances of those we in these times deem as ‘attractive’. False people, creatures built from clichés, chemicals and plastic. I was like all the rest of them, I laughed at every banal joke that society fed me, worked every day in a place I hated, earned money to fuel a boring relationship with a girl who stood out not at all. I saw the world through the filtered windows of my television and computer. And when this, all this was taken from me, I felt the same insipid depression as so many others. Until I discovered my pain, my beauty, my art.

I’m sharper than other artists. Even the greats. More cutting edge. My art is bold, confronting but graceful. Bold, but delicate. Intricate. I keep my skills finely honed, and soon the world shall see my masterpiece, my terribly beauty. I write this, so that the world may understand it. I am not arrogant to say that I am a great artist, it is a mere statement of fact. I have given myself utterly to my heart, body and soul. It will be brought into the world through my sweat and blood. I care not for money, for I shall not live to enjoy it. I shall die for my masterpiece, my gift to the world. That it will exist is enough for me, though it will likely not last long, in its original state. Nature’s endless degradations will make sure of that. But it will be preserved forever, in memory and the viral spread of the digital world. Like the great artists, I sacrifice myself for my art. The world will know me. It must.

I don’t pretend that everyone will accept my gift. It will be to… shocking, too ‘disturbing’ for that. But it will spread, and those who can see through he thin veneer of human ‘respectability’, into the true heart of human nature, they will understand.

I have only one work, one masterpiece that I will give to the world. It is my message. Some of you are stupid, I know. Else you are close-minded or weak of stomach. So I will explain.

To the ‘artists’: You are pathetic! Sniveling foolish cretins! You are nothing before one such as me. Your ‘sacrifices’ pale in the face of true artists’ pain, and to call your insipid medium art is most heinous mockery. I spit on you, all of you weak of spirit and heart.

To society: Wake up! Open your eyes to the world around you. Stop bemoaning your pity inconveniences and embrace the true pain that this world has to offer. Embrace true passion. Dull, all of you, lackluster and gray. I spit on all of you, ignorant dullards.

And finally, to the Police, I say this. What you see before you is the result of no crime. No-one was murdered, or tortured. There is nothing here but the expression of purest suffering, my most beautiful art. Stand back, and you will see. This is my masterpiece, the one gift that has drained my life away. My bittersweet tears flow from this exquisite torment. I revel in each crimson curve, every sinuous tracery, every stroke on that most perfect canvas.

Myself.

Report: Vatican City Metropolitan Police Department                    -12-06-2002-

Above letter found in home of deceased. DNA profiling shows no person but deceased was present in the apartment, either at time of death or for a period approximately 4 months before.

Based on fingerprint and autopsy data, the damage to the body of the deceased was self inflicted.

14-35
Based on anonymous tip 2 days prior, squad car sent to investigate home of deceased.

14-44
Officers found apartment door unlocked, and reported ‘absolute silence’ from the interior.
14-45
Apartment was found to have a single room. Body of deceased was immediately noticed as being chained to the ceiling and heavily mutilated. Officers reported that the only other object in the room was a steel table, upon which were 7 knives, 3 scalpels and the above letter.

15-26
Careful examination revealed complex geometric patterns inherent to the cuts and lacerations on the body of the diseased, and the resulting bloodflow on body and floor. Posthumous psychological profiling underway,

Subject has been deemed ‘too disturbing’. Information regarding the subject is considered classified, and will not be released to the press.

2010 Retrospective - Sear

I don’t like this. It seems… unethical.

You know damn well this is the only way to get accurate information, ever since they launched those  blasted WAILERs. Here he is. Alright, bring him in. Strap him down, properly this time.

Wait, what? Hey!

We don’t need another 7714.

What do you mean? What was-

Have you got the Tricholyxide 322?

Yes, it’s right here.

What is that? What are you-

Good. 30 milligrams should do it. Hurry, it could start at any moment.

No, don’t- ow!

It’s in. I’ll start the timer. What’s your name?

Me? I’m-

No, don’t bother with that. Just write down his number. Yes, 7739. It’s right there.

Okay, we’re ready. It should take effect in a couple seconds.

Alright. Now, speak to us. Just say everything that comes into your head.

Anything, no matter how small.

Now.

Er, okay. Well, I’m sitting in a dark room. This chair is metal, hard and cool. My arm is itchy, but you’ve tied down my wrists. I’m starting to feel a little nauseous. Would you mind telling me just what- oh… The darkness parts. It is dark, but getting lighter. Early morning. Rolling hills, green and grassy. A natural basin, with mountains to the north.

Good, we’ve got the right place this time.

Army on each side, ranks upon ranks. Waiting. One side, unfamiliar. Strange weapons, alien vehicles. Must be enemy. Armor markings, green and gold. Banner too, is foreign. Sinuous.

That must be the Ursocracy.

Quiet!

The other side, our army. Blue and black. Still, quiet, ready. Sky is bright now, sun rising over hills. Sunlight glitters on guns and tanks. Hills are alight, everything shining. A ripple through the ranks, both sides stirring.

Ah, it has begun.

We run at each other, faster and faster. The enemies slow, and stop. Crouch, aim, shoot, next line. Leapfrog, leapfrog, and we are dying. Black and blue fall in waves, and are trampled.

What’s going on? We shouldn’t be taking such heavy losses so early on.

Their weaponry must have greater range than we were led to believe. God damn it!

Now we hide, under the bodies of the fallen, green and gold moving forward. Black tanks surge down the hill, saving us with explosions and fire. Greens and golds crushed under treads, blown apart. We dance in savage glee, their line ragged and breaking.

Well, that’s a bit better.

No, this is all wrong! What are they doing?

Getting some results, it seems.

They deployed too early! They’ll be-

Black tanks swarm the valley floor, quashing and shattering. The golden ones retreat. Ah! The… and… Tolling of thunder, in the golden hills. Trails of smoke. A screeching whine heralds…. AH! It… it… it… A murderous flash, a wall of fire. Our tanks are destroyed, charred carcasses. Men are screaming, aflame. Burning. It’s… going dark, blackness on the edges…

What is he talking about? What is that?

It’s just what he’s seeing. Damn, I didn’t think he’d wear out so soon. Dose him again. Half the amount, he’s already there.

Blackness creeps in, screams and smoke. Ah! Ice in my veins. Spreading, spreading. Tendrils of cold, seeping, reaching… Oh, how it hurts! It- The darkness parts but the valley is black. Smoking craters and ash, everywhere. In the middle a roiling mass of bodies. Glints of green, bursts of blue, quickly covered by ashen mud. We are crushing each other, grinding inexorably. Golden thunder sounds again, a mighty crash. Corpses spin through the air, gold and black alike, tumbling end over end. The ragged hole, swallowed as we clash yet again.

A stalemate? Damn. Well, better than defeat, I suppose.

To the north, a shape. No, many. Sharp-edged shadows, gliding above ground. Blacker than black, absorbing the light as they sweep down… Gahh! The pain… Ice… crystallizes in my brain… it hurts! The-

He’s blacked out.

Well, wake him up. Give him another dose. Double strength.

More? Are you out of your mind? Can’t you see it’s killing him already?

It doesn’t matter. We need to see what’s going on.

Doesn’t matter? He’s not even military. I’m not going to have civilian blood on my- whoah! What the hell are you doing? Don’t you point that thing at me!

I will do whatever needs to be done for the war to be won. If that means a couple civilians die so that millions may live, so be it. Even if it means I have to shoot you and drug him myself. Now, are you going to do it, or not?

You’re crazy, you know that? You’re fucking insane. If you think I’m going to- okay! Okay, I’m doing it.
Nothing’s ha-

Shadows! Pouring down the mountainside. Silence, but for the battle below. They flit through us without pause, blood spraying amidst our screams. We fall, our faces stricken with surprise at the death we never saw. Still they flow, silent death. We are all dead, but their angular darkness is untouched. Blood, light, all absorbed. They course through the valley unchecked, now- ah! South… and east. For us. They… they… it hurts! They are coming! Gahhhhh….

He’s fading again. Hell if they don’t become immunized quickly.

I hope you’re fucking happy now.

Vision is cloudy, but the valley is empty…

This is bad… they move so fast.

He’ll be damaged for life, even if he survives. Which is unlikely.

The ravaged earth slowly drinks our blood…

Never seen anything like this before. Who would have tech like this?

My veins are melting…

Are you even listening to me?

Quickly, go to the high command. Tell them what happened here.

Oh, I’ll tell them. You can be sure of that.

Just remember. We have to win if you want to survive to court-martial me.

Fucking asshole.

Too much ice… all gone… dripping away… cells… ruptured…. I am dissolving… dying… again… I… everything is broken… help… me…

Send in the next one.

2010 Retrospective - Apocylapse

The wind howls across the desolate landscape, kicking up flurries of frozen ash. It flows around the stiff forms of thousands and thousands of corpses, dead of starvation or exposure. Nothing moves in the frigid wasteland that Earth has become, except for the continuous soft whispering of ash streaming from the tortured atmosphere. The world is bathed in the eerie twilight of noon, the sun hidden behind the ever-shifting film of smog that blankets the upper atmosphere. It is… a nuclear winter.

1 Month Earlier:

“Get down!” The complex shudders as another impact rocks the mountain above. Concrete dust sifts down out of the ceiling onto the carpet. Red lights flash continuously, in rhythm with the sounding of the klaxons. A hydraulic hiss as a silo door opens above, and the roar as another battery of missiles is launched. The doors begin to hiss shut. “Radar contacts! It’s another nuclear strike! ETA 2 minutes!” The doors are stopped by a dislodged shard of rock. A missile lances into this, the last hidden missile silo, through the open doors. The inhabitants are instantly vaporised.

All around the world, automated defence systems launch missile after missile around the world in retaliation, nothing changed by the fact that there is no-one left to visit vengeance upon.

1 Week Earlier:

The sprawling city is pristine. Sparkling white skyscrapers clutter the sky, winking in the afternoon sun, The streets are filled with the bustle of commerce. A piercing whine splits the air, turning heads up and down the street. High in the sky, a glint of steel, followed by a perfect contrail. It curves as people watch, expecting some message from a lovestruck suitor. But it does not turn again, just speeds into the city. Panicked screams ring out as people realise the truth. Suddenly, havoc reigns as they rush to escape, knowing full well deep down that it is already too late. A blinding flash, a shattering wave of sound. A wall of wind and heat rips through the city, shredding people and buildings alike. A mushroom shaped cloud is thrown into the air, a black standard of impending doom.

1 Day Earlier:

In an underground nuclear silo, the supercomputer network stutters. Lasting only a thousandth of a second, no human notices this glitch as a new code mechanism enters the mainframe. The firewall detects it, but lets it enter unmolested, recognising fragments of its own programming intermingled with that of high security clearance. The construct floats through the programming, stray bits of code intermingled to form programmed parameters.

An ICBM hisses quietly into a delivery tube, unnoticed by the humans. Coordinates are pasted from one of the many contingencies that have been absorbed into the construct from the automated defence programs. The doors open, and the rocket roars to life. The inhabitants of the silo try desperately to stop it, but the construct is made up of fragments of coding from all of the military programs, overriding them all. The nuclear missile exits the atmosphere, to re-enter in one day.

1 Hour Earlier:

Two computer technicians work in an underground missile repository, refurbishing the computer systems and coding in new targeting software. They work in silence, computer screens bathing their faces in white and blue. The younger sits back with a sigh, the final entry already integrating its code into the mainframe. The older walks over. He stares intently at the screen, noticing a stray bit of extraneous code. The younger brushes it off. “Jeez Mal, so I forgot to trim the code. Give me a break. You don’t actually believe that stuff about stray code bunching up and causing glitches, do you? It’s not like it’s the end of the world.”

Apocylapse: (noun) The one tiny error, the singular tiny lapse in judgement, that heralds the end of the world.
